Time Travels on Scent
If music is how we decorate time, then fragrance how we decorate memories.
There’s a quote often attributed to Jean-Michel Basquiat that ends, “Music is how we decorate time.” It’s a powerful idea - that time isn’t just something we pass through, but something we can shape, color, and remember. If music decorates time, then fragrance might be how we adorn it.
A scent can pull you into a memory you didn’t know was waiting. It can take you back to your grandmother’s garden or forward into the kind of peace you’re still learning to choose.
At Black Culture Candles, every candle is part of what we call a Scent Journey. It’s not just
about fragrance—it’s about memory, connection, and creating a sensory timeline of the life
you’ve lived, the people you’ve loved, and the moments that made you feel most like
yourself.
Fragrance, like music, can time travel. Not in the sci-fi sense, but in a deeply personal way.
You light the wick, and suddenly you’re there. It’s Saturday morning cleaning day. The
windows are open, sunlight filters through, and the scent of melon and eucalyptus fills the
air. Or it’s Friday night. Chocolate, bourbon, and fig curl around the room as you sink into
rest.
Jean-Michel Basquiat knew what it meant to capture time. His work blended culture,
memory, and commentary with Black identity, jazz, the streets of Brooklyn, African history,
and contemporary pain. it all layered into raw, eclectic canvases. He didn’t just paint
images; he painted experiences. He made memory visible.
That’s what we aim to do with scent.
Our Scent Journey isn’t about an escape; it’s about a return. It’s about presence. Whether
it’s the warmth of Black Love or the bright nostalgia of Black Joy, our candles are designed
to help you reconnect with what matters most: where you’ve been, who you are, and the
moments that stay with you.
Because scent doesn’t just fill a room, it tells you who you are and how you feel. And when
a candle is made with intention, it brings home to your space.
