Article: Room to Breathe
Room to Breathe

Space, Story, and the Art of Scent
There’s a quiet moment when everything pauses. There's a breath between what was and what’s next. In these in-between spaces, we’re invited to take a look at our surroundings, our routines, and even ourselves.
For me, creating space has never been about emptiness. It’s about being intentional.
In Black culture, our homes have always been more than shelter. They hold memory. They carry the rhythm of our days, like Saturday morning cleaning with music in the air, holiday gatherings that spill from room to room, and the traditions handed down through generations.
Space is more than physical.
It’s emotional, sensory, and cultural.
It’s choosing to keep what feeds us: the joy, the laughter, the people and stories that feel like home. It’s also letting go, gently, of what no longer serves us; the clutter, the noise, the expectations.
Sometimes, creating space is simple.
Clearing a shelf.
Opening the blinds.
Lighting a candle and letting the scent settle.
Other times, it’s quieter work.
Pausing to notice what you’re holding onto.
Honoring the rituals that give meaning to every day.
Scent as a Tool for Creating Space
Lighting a candle is a small act, but it holds power.
Scent can mark the end of a long day, the start of something new, or ground us in the present moment.
The Cleaning Day candle was created with that feeling in mind.
Not just the act of cleaning, but the moment after, the sense that the space is yours again. Calm. Clear. Ready.
An Invitation
Whenever you find yourself at a threshold between seasons, routines, or chapters, I invite you to create space, not just in your home, but in your life.
Space for joy.
Space for culture.
Space for connection.
Let your space be a reflection of who you are and what you love.
Let it hold memory, welcome new stories, and offer room for what’s next.
If you need a flickering companion along the way, you’ll find one here.
Wishing you warmth, presence, and space to breathe.
